Abstract :
In this paper, channel management strategies for mobile packet radio communication are presented and analyzed. The target of the study is to establish a channel management strategy for mobile packet radio communication, which should be a consistent mixture of channel management strategies of mobile speech communication systems and wired packet communication systems. The channel management strategy should consider three sources of transmission error, namely, collision, interference, and Gaussian noise. The measures to overcome these obstacles are: (a) handoff (b) collision resolution, and (c) ARQ. Each of these measures incurs some transmission delay. The best channel management strategy for packet radio communication determines whether to practice handoff or not, and whether to enter collision resolution mode or not so as to minimize the transmission delay
