  • Abstract
The effective range of a guided missile used as an interceptor weapon is a function of the firing conditions. This phenomenon, neglected in previous studies, has an important effect on the terminal phase of the interception trajectory. The present paper describes a guidance algorithm which takes into account the dependence of the maximum effective weapon range on the firing conditions i.e. the end conditions of the interception. The study involves a three-dimensional simulation of realistic models for two aircraft and a generic medium-range air-to-air missile. The guidance algorithm, which has a built-in potential for real-time implementation, allows a global optimization of the interception. Results indicate that by modifying the terminal phase of the trajectory, the time of interception is shortened.
