Abstract :
Yunnan Province is extremely rich in hydropower resources. The Lanchang river is one of the most important rivers in Yunnan Province and would be exploited first. To maximize the benefit, cascaded hydropower projects on the Lanchang river at the middle and lower reaches would be exploited. Jinghong Hydropower Project is one of the cascaded projects to be developed and is very suitable for exporting electricity to Thailand. At present, Thailand is the single largest purchaser of electricity energy in South-East Asia. It will be necessary to build a high voltage transmission line of approximately 1100 km. The transmission line would cross territories of the three countries: PR China, Lao PDR and Thailand. One of the study results is that HVDC is more suitable than HVAC
