Abstract
In 1985 M. Loomes gave a presentation at the Conference of Heads of Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing at Hatfield Polytechnic on the teaching of mathematics to first year undergraduate computer science students via formal approach. The paper reflects on six years of experience gained since the 1985 Conference, and presents some of the more general lessons that have been learnt. In particular, the case is made that not only is such an approach to undergraduate teaching both desirable and possible, but that it can also be use to great effect with HND students.<>
