Abstract :
Instruments, which may be separated from their supply unit are electrically connected to them by removable connectors. If they are used underwater, we must distinguish between those which must be separated out of the water and those which may be separated also underwater. For special operations several arrangements are necessary. They have three main tasks: 1. Transmission of energy to the instrument. 2. Transmission of data to the instrument. 3. Transmission of data from the instrument. All these features can be realised by using a magnetic coupled connection between the instrument and the supply unit. Many problems such as feeding through the walls, sealing and corrosion are avoided. Instruments for deep-sea operation need walls of several mm thickness, which also define the magnetic gap. This gap limits the efficiency for the energy transmission and the signal-to-noise ratio of the data transmission. Using an alternate mode of operation, changing between energy and data transmission, only one pair of cores is necessary. This allows a rotationally symmetrical arrangement of the cores
