Abstract :
Aerosol phase function, PA(χ), is estimated in backscatter (χ>130°) from match-up AVHRR and ship Sun-photometer measurements. The linearized single-scattering approximation for the radiative transfer equation is used, with some adjustments to account approximately for multiple scattering effects. The newly estimated PA(χ) is in agreement with the phase function of maritime aerosol proposed in the scientific literature. The derived PA(χ) may be used to constrain the range of its variability in real marine atmosphere, which is important for aerosol retrievals from CZCS, AVHRR, MODIS, MISR, and SeaWiFS
