Abstract :
In deploying a wireless sensor network with a given number of nodes, a placement policy is required to minimize the power consumption needed for communication. This issue is addressed by formulating a non-linear optimization problem. To avoid combinatorial complexity, we propose an incremental self-deployment algorithm by adding nodes one-at-a-time into the network in the most energy-efficient way identified. This scheme, which achieves possibly suboptimal performance, is tested in a simulation environment and its effectiveness is discussed.
