Abstract :
The magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the quaternary boroncarbides compound GdNiBC have been investigated by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The compound exhibits a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at TC ~ 15 K and the total spin of Gd ion in the ground state is 7/2. Under a field change of 0-70 kOe, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change (-ΔSMmax) and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTadmax) are 24.9 J/kg K and 13.0 K, respectively, the corresponding relative cooling power (RCP) is 801 J/kg.
