Abstract
Summary form only given. In-service ultrasonic flaw detection by the A-scan technique is carried out by British coal on a variety of shaft forgings of lengths up to 9 metres. An insight is given into the problems associated with the testing of shaft forgings and the developments that have taken place within British Coal are discussed. Future developments, based upon current experience in the use of digital ultrasonics, which are required to improve further the reliability of testing, are also discussed
