Abstract
A novel application, selective decompression, is introduced. It makes it possible to access a hierarchically coded image and retrieve that information necessary to decode a selected image portion excluding any other data. This technique allows the handling of large images and provides a solution to the problems associated with them, namely: storage, excessive transmission delays, congestion of network resources, and mismatch between image and screen dimensions
