Abstract :
A new method to forecast flight delays has been presented in this paper. This new method is based on content-based recommendation system. In the forecast model, the events ldquoflight delaysrdquo and airports have been mapped to users and items, respectively, which are the concepts in the recommendation system. According to the propagation of the delay, this new method alerts the target airport by monitoring the status of related airports. The observed status is compared with the history data in order to predict the seriousness of delay. Since the airborne hours between each two airports are usually more than an hour, this method could give the alarm at least 1 hour ahead. Besides, the method requires minimum online calculation, and therefore it guarantees that the delay forecast can be delivered in a quick and timely manner.
