Abstract :
A small-size hybrid loop/open-slot antenna for the LTE smartphone is presented. The antenna is disposed in a small notch of 7 × 40 mm2 in the system ground plane of the smartphone and has a thickness of 5.8 mm to be capable of embedding within most modern smartphones. The antenna mainly comprises a capacitively fed loop antenna and a ground strip embedded therein to create an open-slot antenna so as to generate additional resonant modes for bandwidth enhancement. The antenna can provide two wide operating bands to cover the LTE low band (698-960 MHz) and the LTE middle/high bands (1710-2690/3400-3800 MHz). In this study, the creation of the open-slot antenna using a ground strip embedded in the ground clearance region for the coupled-fed loop antenna is addressed. The proposed antenna is also fabricated and tested. Both the simulation study and the experimental results are presented.
