  • Abstract
    Web-based distance learning is used for a wide range of educational programs, from one day certificate programs to complete graduate degree programs. Some of the advantages include flexibility, convenience and removal of geographical limitations on student location. These advantages are best provided by a combination of the asynchronous and synchronous delivery modes. The asynchronous delivery mode enables on-demand content and flexibility while the synchronous delivery mode provides for interactivity and sense of community. The developed Internet Software Development Program utilizes this combined approach, in addition to traditional classroom/laboratory setting, in four certificate courses. Based on that experience, a hybrid approach was developed where traditional classroom lectures and lab exercises are done simultaneously for both classroom students and distance learning students. All students access the same content and can interact using audio. Based on the initial positive feedback, this approach is being refined for use in teaching a preparatory Java programming course for a fully online graduate program in information technology.
