The practical application of safety standard BS:EN 61508 to nuclear waste management plant

The paper describes the practical application and tailoring of the relevant parts of the standard, and in particular the development of a deterministic matrix approach to aid in the specification of required safety performance for protection systems. The assessment and engineering substantiation of protection systems is an intrinsic part of the continuing safety case management for nuclear facilities. The use of appropriate statistical methods for analysing observed field failure rate data is described.
