Abstract :
Some of the performance concerns regarding open services support in future networks are presented, with special emphasis on the trader object, one of the central concepts in open distributed processing. Since the open services environment places an emphasis on cost factors, a precise definition is needed of trader performance measures based on its enterprise viewpoint. Further performance studies can deal with various traffic issues, such as appropriate policies for the selection of the best service provider from a set of candidates, taking into consideration dynamic server state information. Simulation shows that a minimum workload selection policy can produce acceptable system response times under assumptions of quite high delays in provision of dynamic state information. This conclusion also holds for a policy based on a minimum queue. The effects of significant variability in service times in terms of response degradation are also shown.
