Abstract
The paper presents a tutorial on the physical environment in which a high bit-rate digital subscriber line will have to evolve and succeed. Special attention is given to most damaging impairments that are encountered in the subscriber lines, such as propagation loss, characteristic impedance, the near-end and far-end crosstalk. Somewhat less important impairments such as mismatched impedances and reflection coefficients are also briefly described.
