Abstract :
Arising of various bandwidth-hungry Internet applications within the recent few years leaded to a necessity for much more bandwidth and higher communication speeds. Subject of this paper is the performance analysis of IP over WDM Networks that supply faster Internet and network connections that meet increasing demand of bandwidth in parallel to the increasing number of Internet applications and further a comparison of the proposed model against present Internet Networks is included. To accomplish this goal, a model of WDM over SDH over ATM over IP (the hardware of current Internet network) is deployed between Ankara and Istanbul (the two most populous cities of Turkey) and a performance test was run. Subsequently, the ATM and SDH hardware was removed from the circuit and the performance test was executed by connecting IP with WDM directly. As the test results of the two models were compared, it was seen that the new proposed model has yielded better results then the current model. The model proposed in this article (which discards ATM and SDH hardware) not only brings about 40 % overall increase in performance, but also eliminates the maintenance and operation cost of these discarded networks on behalf of the Telecom operators.
