Abstract :
A transmission network in a power system is a physical link between power plants, distribution network and customer installations. Neighboring national networks that are interconnected with each other constitute the European transmission system in synchronous operation. The internal electricity market in Europe as well as national markets use the transmission network as a medium for market transactions and thereby place further emphasis on its central position. The secure and reliable operation of the system as a whole and of all its components is a condition for secure electricity supply to customers and for a smooth functioning of the market. Maintenance of the transmission network has a decisive role in achieving a high reliability of the transmission network and thereby the system as a whole. Based on statistical data on network operation for the period 1995–2006, the efficiency of maintenance is assessed and possibilities for increased reliability are considered.
