Abstract :
Multiple description coding (MDC) is an important alternative compression approach for networks which have tendency to packet losses. Many devices connected to packet networks, such as the Internet, aim to transfer multimedia data between parties. Multiple description coding of video is becoming popular since many devices, for example mobile phones, nowadays have video transmission capabilities. In this paper, the optimal filtering strategy recently proposed for MDC of still images, is adapted to video coding to improve the quality of multiple description video coding. Experimental results show that the proposed approach enables superior MDC performance for video in case of packet losses.
