Abstract
The development of the European power systems is driven to large extent by the European energy policy formulated as directives, regulations and decisions of the European Commission and the European Parliament including compulsory standard such as for example “eco-design”. Despite the inertia in the implementation of the common energy policy and from time to time a lack of enthusiasm to several proposed solutions in some countries the unification imposed by the common energy policy is gradually moving ahead changing Europe in more and more unified area of the economies. The paper presents reviews of the main elements of the European energy policy indicating the greatest challenges and the most prospective directions of the power system development.
