Abstract
The paper presents a Network Management Systems (NMS) based on a Geographical Information System (GIS) for describing network infrastructure. The system is designed to be adapted to emerging technologies by using an extensible, ontology-based object modeling system that allows users to describe new type of equipments, as well as representing real-time equipment status gathered through specific network monitoring techniques. Also, the model contains spatial information used by the GIS engine for entity representation on the vector map. The system builds on the ontology model used to develop network specific algorithms to solve general domain problems like data circuit length or bandwidth optimization.
