Abstract
This paper describes applications of sensor technology and ambient intelligence in intermodal transport. Monitoring goods and vehicle status using heterogeneous sensor networks can be seen as the next step in Fleet Management Solutions. In this work, we describe an intelligent ambient system developed in order to monitor multiple aspects related to vehicles and freight in real time, providing tools to efficiently improve commercial operations of transport companies. It has been carried out within the framework of a national project involving companies, universities and research centres working in different areas of the transport sector. The proposed solution has been validated within real field tests in road transport vehicles.
