Abstract :
The design and performance of a spiral-helix antenna array operating from 500 MHz to 2 GHz is discussed. The array is developed as an alternative to the traditional electronic attack embodiment of a tapered quad-ridged horn and it is capable of not only providing that function, but also surveillance, direction finding, and two-way communications. When compared to a commercial-off-the-shelf quad-ridged horn, over 2x volume reduction and significantly increased gain are obtained. The array aperture is composed of six 6-inch diameter antennas arranged in a hexagonal grid around a central element, occupying a total volume of 20 inches by 20 inches and 2.5 inches in depth. For demonstration purposes, a corporate-fed uniform amplitude distribution is applied.
