In a search for competent engineers… Competence framework in the field of sustainable manufacturing

In response to a growing need to provide engineers with knowledge and competences in the field of sustainable manufacturing, this paper will present the preliminary results of the ongoing research within the European FP7 Integrated Project TARGET on competence identification and development. The main objective of this paper is to present the developed competence framework in the field of sustainable manufacturing. The proposed framework can assist engineering education institutions to accommodate their curriculum and education programs so that graduating engineers will be able to function effectively in complex environments meeting future sustainability requirements and objectives in manufacturing. It can furthermore serve as a starting point for defining relevant building blocks for designing technology enhanced learning environments for rapid competence development.
