  • Abstract
This paper presents a method to control power of a synchronous generator driven by a powerful variable speed wind turbine. The generator rotor has a conical shape and allows the air-gap variation through the lateral movement of the rotor subassembly, using a worm gear. In operation, the generator is not disconnected from the electrical grid, even at high wind speeds as the automatic increase of air-gap limits the power of generator. There is however a mechanical limitation of generator speed at high wind speeds at which the mechanical resistance of the system would be in danger. Conical-rotor synchronous generator has the advantage that automatically limits its power regardless of wind speed and is no longer necessary a limitation resistance to do that. By lowering the excitation current the generator current will be limited below its nominal value. Construction of the conical rotor lead to some complications of manufacturing process and mechanical assembly of magnetic cores of the generator to allow controlled longitudinal movement of the rotor during operation. These complications were solved and currently are constructed conical rotor motors used for electric braking.
