Abstract
We present a new method for the determination of the scattering length of optical photons in scintillator crystals. The new method, based on the direct measurement of the scattered light is compared with the usually applied indirect method. Investigating different samples from two manufacturers, scattering length of 0.55...6.8 m at 405 nm wavelength, and more than 80 m at 532 nm wavelength was determined. Dependence of the scattering length on the polarization of the light, as well as on the crystal sample and its orientation is also discussed.
