Abstract :
The network performances of two commercial wireless local area networks are measured using a novel technique. Current methods of evaluating the performance of WLANs are largely based on file transfer operations using benchmark tests such as Novell´s PERFORM3, AT&T´s Read/Write, PC Magazine´s Lab Series, Smart LAN Performance Test and others. Measurements obtained from these tests must specify the processor type, processor speed and network operating system in order that meaningful comparisons can be made. A simple technique introduced in this paper provides quantitative results in terms of throughput and response time measured at the medium access control sublayer. The method will be useful for evaluating the performance of current and future wireless LAN systems.
