Abstract :
This paper presents the performance enhancement for a self-routing packet network called the plane interconnected parallel network (PIPN) which exploits the properties of banyan networks for use in fast packet switches while improving the performance by alleviating the drawbacks of banyan networks especially under heterogeneous traffic requirements. The performance of the PIPN is enhanced by using, first, deflection with tandem networks and then by internal buffering. The performance of the enhanced PIPNs and the enhanced banyan networks are examined by simulation and compared under heterogeneous traffic requirements since the motivation for the introduction of the PIPN was the drastic performance degradation of banyan networks as the incoming traffic becomes heterogeneous. It is shown that the PIPN using some performance enhancing techniques is superior to the other banyan network based interconnection structures employing the same performance enhancing techniques.
