Abstract
Summary form only given. The long distances between key population centers and the rugged terrain that is typical of much of inland Australia presents a number of unique challenges to the planners, builders and maintainers of telecommunications infrastructure in Australia. It is these challenges and some of the innovative ways they have been addressed which is the subject of the bulk of this presentation. The drivers for the planning of optical fiber networks in the Australian environment are examined.
