Abstract
This paper presents the current status of the National Automated Highway System Consortium (NAHSC) regarding automated highway systems supporting mixed (automated and manual) traffic. One motivation for mixed traffic is to build up as technology matures. But human factors must also be considered, since the driver will not monitor reliably. Response to all hazards encountered by human drivers is essential. The team identified five situations that cover almost all such hazards. In many cases the vehicle needs information from the road, such as drivers get visually, and so designated roads will be used. These may be instrumented or restricted.
