Abstract
We emphasise some fundamental ideas that definitely need to be considered if a useful network backbone is to be built. Surprisingly, an often neglected constraint with considerable influence on the network backbone, is the network traffic. We suggest a formalised, practical approach to the construction of the traffic matrix, which denotes the end to end traffic between all possible pairs of backbone access points. We deal with generating the initial backbone topology based on a number of constraints. We extend the problem of the variable number of nodes in the design procedure. The number and position of the nodes are denoted on the basis of various systematised topological constraints. As a conclusion, we suggest how to design a functioning backbone.
