Abstract
The application of Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCLs) in electrical power system has recently attracted increasing attentions, which is encouraged by the pronounced progress of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) technology. Many topologies of SFCL have been developed and yet to be put into practice. In this paper, the resistive type and flux-lock type of SFCL are firstly introduced. Some comparisons between these two topologies are carried out through time domain simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC regarding fault current limitation and voltage dip improvement during faults. The fault detecting time and current flowing into the HTS element are also discussed when similar symmetrical fault current limitation is achieved. Finally, in this paper the impacts of SFCLs on Distributed Generation (DG) are studied at two typical locations of a radial power system regarding voltage quality and mechanical speed maintenance.
