Abstract
This paper proposes operational and control strategies for islanded microgrids with wind energy conversion system (WECS) and diesel generator system. The considered wind-diesel microgrid presents high penetration level of wind generation. The proposed control enables two operation modes for the microgrid: wind-only (WO) and wind-diesel (WD) modes. A control loop, added to a DC dump load (DL), is proposed to control the voltage at the DC-link in both operation modes. In the WD mode, the DC-link voltage is also controlled by a control loop added to the diesel generator connected to the AC grid. The microgrid operation does not require the use of battery energy storage system. The proposed control aims mainly at preserving the system stability and maximizing the energy provided by the WECS.
