Abstract :
This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of post-fault corrective control action through the planned Western HVDC link in the Great Britain (GB) transmission network. It is shown that both transient as well as oscillatory stability problems could be tackled using such a corrective control strategy which allows higher pre-fault loading of the AC network without compromising security. The corrective control is formulated as a Model Predictive Control (MPC) problem which explicitly considers the control constraints i.e. the short-term overload capability of the Western HVDC in this case. A case study on a 40-generator dynamic equivalent of the GB system is presented to show how the active power of the Western HVDC link can be rapidly controlled within its short-term overload capability to ensure stable operation of the GB transmission network.
