  • Abstract
A novel active frequency selective surface (AFSS) is proposed for millimeter wave beam switching antenna applications. The AFSS unit-cell is formed by loading a square loop element with two electrostatically actuated cantilever arms. When the cantilever switches are in the UP state, the proposed structure provides a wide passband from 56.62 GHz to 65.08 GHz. The AFSS can become opaque to the same vertically polarized plane wave with a transmission loss of 56.65dB by changing the status of the cantilever from UP to DOWN.
