Abstract :
Brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) eliminates the slip rings and brush gear and thus having the benefit of high reliability and low maintenance costs, which shows commercial promise for either grid-connected or standalone power generation. This paper proposes a new field-oriented control method for a BDFIG in stand-alone application. The proposed control system is oriented with the control winding (CW) current of the BDFIG to face the unique challenges in stand-alone power generation, such as the rapid voltage regulation when the load varies and the current limitation requirement for safety purpose. The mathematical modeling, control structure and controller design of the proposed field-oriented control system are presented in this paper, and a 32kW stand-alone BDFIG experimental setup is built to verify the design. Experimental results show that the proposed control strategy has good performance for stand-alone application.
