  • Abstract
    ● Extended routes were successfully used with the TSS tool suite and the DSAS tool and appropriate procedures were developed ● Extended routes reduced time in departure queue for 757s without impacting arrivals or departures ● Operations were judged as safe ● The number of clearances and workload increased for all controllers, but to a moderate and acceptable level - Increased workload in extended route condition was due to • Effort in tactically creating gap near runway for 757s • Increased delays at TRACON boundary - Latter unexpected finding indicates that if delays were the same at the boundary in the two conditions, workload would be lower ● More thorough investigation of integrating extended routes into TSS seems warranted - Routes provide needed flexibility to TSS tools near runway - Could facilitate handling different levels of aircraft equipage - Controllers found them useful ● This exploratory run could provide a starting point
