Abstract :
Power generation and transmission capability is a problem which Pakistan is facing nowadays. Tajikistan is 8th in the world having reserves of water and other power resources. In the past, Pakistan signed `Memorandum of Understanding´ with Tajikistan to import 1000 MW of electricity via Afghanistan. Also, trend in renewable energy is increasing day by day, question is which transmission system should be chosen for maximum efficiency and performance. There are two available options for power transmission; High Voltage DC and High Voltage AC- transmission (Flexible AC-transmission). Keeping in view, that there will be many applications of HVDC in Pakistan, when HVDC transmission is decided, its benefits and its use will grow in Pakistan. In paper the general overview of HVDC is presented by comparing it with HVAC, and working of HVDC transmission power electronics and control is presented in this paper.
