Abstract
With the rapid advancement of wireless communication technology, the growth of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and its usage in different fields is increasing day by day. The processing of sensor output for image based applications is a major problem. A number of techniques have been proposed to solve this problem. Among them, image compression scheme is one of the techniques that perform better for processing the image. This paper describes the various types of image compression techniques and their impact over wireless sensor network. The performance of each compression technique is analyzed in terms of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Mean Square Error (MSE), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), Compression Ratio (CR) etc. From the simulation results, it is observed that, based on the analysis of the above mentioned performance metrics, the appropriate image compression technique is suggested for resource constrained WSN.
