Abstract :
Ultrasonic machining is using a combination of ultrasonic longitudinal vibration and abrasive slurry. Ultrasonic machining is effective for machining in brittle materials such as ceramic materials. However, conventional ultrasonic machining methods use only longitudinal vibration. The few studies have investigated ultrasonic machining using combinations of complex vibration and abrasive slurry. In this context, we have developed a new method using abrasive slurry together with an ultrasonic complex vibration which produces longitudinal and torsional vibration for machining of brittle materials. Ultrasonic machining using complex vibration is expected to improve both machining time and accuracy as compared with longitudinal vibration machining. In this study, soda-lime glass is used as the material processed using complex and longitudinal ultrasonic vibration, and the results of measuring the hole machining characteristics show that ultrasonic complex vibration shortens the machining time and provides high machining accuracy.
