Abstract :
Hearing aids can restore partial hearing for hearing impaired people to compensate hearing loss. One of the objective of a hearing aid is to fit the dynamic range of speech and sounds into the dynamic range of the hearing impaired people. This paper takes an approach to design a FPGA based system which can separate the input speech signal into different bands and gain is adjusted for individual band. For an impaired person the range of levels between weakest sound that can be heard and the most intense sound that can be tolerated is less than normal listener. In this paper the propose hearing aid amplify weak sounds more than it amplify intense sound. It is observed that the proposed algorithm implemented on FPGA provides better sound perception to hearing impairment.
