Abstract :
This paper presents a novel power management unit for PV-battery hybrid systems. The proposed unit tracks the PV cells´ Maximum Power Point (MPP), distributes the power among dual loads, and handles any surplus or deficit power by a battery. A digital controller has been realized using VHDL, and downloaded on an FPGA to manage a novel single inductor Dual Input Multiple Output DC-DC converter. A prototype has been implemented, tested, and verified under varying light intensities. The experiments have showed that for a sampling time of 5ms, both MPP tracking and dual load regulation can be accomplished within 300ms and 0.1V error.
