Abstract
The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is a new family member in the Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS). It increases the usability and availability of Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) around China in Asia-Pacific area, and the global users can also profit from the constellation for high accuracy. The progresses, applications, contributions as well as challenges of BDS is reviewed and analyzed, especially for the transportation domain. In the concept of redundancy, the BDS has been incrementally constructed, and open is one of the principles of BDS, so the works related with international cooperation and the progresses in standardization have been also discussed. At last, the recent plans of BDS are comprehensively presented, and the issues with compatibility and interoperability are briefly described.
