Abstract :
Mariners such as captains and navigation officers memorize unique situations in their experience and make use of them in the ship handling of subsequent voyages to achieve safety. On the other hand, by a detailed investigation and inquiry of one or more examples, existence and causes of problems can be clarified. Moreover, a general law and theory can be established. This was our case study. The general law of navigation safety was demonstrated in the cases that we experienced. In addition, a causative analysis of the cases and consideration of possible countermeasures were performed. Education and training are important as a countermeasure; thus, we considered them on decision making and proposed case training. The case training was aimed at improving the performance of this “headwork.” We believe that it is positioned as a part of human-factor training.
