Abstract
This paper presents a comparison between two thermal management strategies for cold startup of automotive Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). A sub-freezing thermal model is developed with Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) to evaluate power, energy and heating time requirements for the Keep-Warm and the Thaw at Start strategies. The modeling results establish relationships between the ambient temperature and parking time, and the cold startup time and energy requirement.
