Abstract :
The increase of devices equipped with various radio access technologies (RATs) and wide deployment of Wi-FI access points (APs) makes the ISM bands more crowded, thus causing more interference among RATs. 5G networks require to support sufficient network capacity for increased data traffic and support device-to-device (D2D) communication for high channel utilization. In this work, we propose a new approach for D2D resource management using centralized spectrum database. A D2D radio resource manager can be located in either eNodeB (i.e. base station) or cloud. The D2D radio resource manager performs various functions for channel assignment of D2D communication, device matching, and location approximation. Devices in the network report the quality information of ISM band channels for their location to database. A D2D resource manager can select the best channel to D2D communication based on the channel information on ISM bands. In addition, D2D radio resource manager can provide improved channel assignment mechanisms which guarantee coexistence with unlicensed LTE (LTE-U) and small cells by minimizing the impact of these technologies on D2D communication over the ISM bands.
