Abstract :
Metamaterials represent a fascinating class of artificial structures that brings new opportunities to photonics due to the original principles of manipulating the electromagnetic waves in various spectral ranges. Basically metamaterials are composed from structural elements possessing optical properties which are strongly different from the properties of a bulk structure. This is the reason to consider the optical properties in the different scale levels such as material properties, structural element shape, structural element arrangement, and sample boundaries. As an illustrative example, we consider here 2D square lattices of parallel infinite dielectric circular rods and calculate the optical properties of each level step by step.
