Abstract
This paper will present the detailed feasibility and design assessments of a linear electromagnetic actuator that can be adopted for providing the required roll gap adjustment forces directly. A systematic analyzing scheme will be developed to optimize the system structures within specified physical constraints and steady-state operational requirements. The magnetic fluxes, thrust generations, and force densities that can be provided by the proposed system will be analyzed in detail, and the comparisons with those conventional electromagnetic devices will be provided. By considering the related system response time, the corresponding dynamic operational performances are also investigated. Hence, the replacement feasibilities of such electromagnetic systems for those commonly used hydraulic cylinder/servo valve compositions in the tandem roll mill can be confirmed.
