Abstract :
Classroom teaching is mostly carried out by means of live lectures. Lectures are by far the most prevalent method of education and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future. Worldwide about 100,000,000 lecture hours are given live annually and almost none recorded - even though student seek out recorded lectures.Existing lecture capture technology is a partial solution - but those systems are expensive, complex, and managing them (and the recorded lectures) requires an IT department. This results in only very few of the 100,000,000 lecture hours given annually by colleges around the world being recorded - an enormous waste of valuable content LectureMonkey is a student and teacher collaborative solution, which leverages students mobiles to record any lecture anywhere, turn any classroom into a collaborative, active classroom and any lecture into a blended learning experience. LectureMonkey has been doing research in the marketplace over the last two years - letting students and teachers use the system to record and share lectures. We have used iterative and agile methodologies to quickly modify the product based on feedback. During these iterations we have learned what works and what doesn´t, and what it will take to spark mass lecture capturing. LectureMonkey has been downloaded about 60,000 times, and has been used to record around 2,800 lectures (about 180 a month). Lectures have been viewed 14,000 times by 3,400 users. Just imagine how learning would change if everyone knew that at the end of class they would have a recording available - not just audio, but rich media that includes audio, boards and presentation. Add student comments as a natural part of the flow of the recording, mix in sharing among classmates and you have a recipe to radically improve the way students learn. LectureMonkey provides the ability to automatically capture every lecture using smartphones, making those recordings a part of the class notes - which can be easily shared with and enhanced by classmates. Needing only a smartphone and access to the Internet, LectureMonkey combines lecture capture (high quality audio, board images and presentation capture) and collaborative comments into a crowd sourced, shared, multimedia summary of a class. Students can have all their lectures and notes in their pocket or in a browser - available anytime, anywhere.. LectureMonkey is the only solution for mass ad-hoc lecture capture for live lectures anywhere, anytime - even though lecture capturing has a proven benefit for students. . LectureMonkey modernizes class notes. Class notes are crucial to learning, but haven´t really changed since the 1950´s. Lecture Monkey combines lecture recording together with the mobile paradigms of texting, tweeting, snapchat for collaborative note taking to enhance learning. . LectureMonkey democratizes modern pedagogical strategies like flipped classrooms and peer learning by making it simple for every live lecture to easily become an active, e-Learning experience that embraces paradigms natural to today´s students.
