Abstract
Terrain area has a large and irregular surface, which is a special object of study in the field of 3D reconstruction, especially in the fields of virtual simulation. Terrain recovery from a single image is to reconstruct the terrain model which can correctly reflect the rugged surface and has a 3D visual effect using a single 2D Terrain Shading Map. The minimization algorithm is one of the Shape From Shading method. As a basis by analyzing the Shape From Shading method, the paper studies deeply on the characters of minimization algorithm and applies it to terrain height recovery from Terrain Shading Map. Comparing the elevation data calculated by the minimization method to real height data, the experiments verify the feasibility of minimization method.
